Is Alabama The Third Coast?

ABC News recently ran an article touting our area as a great alternative to the beaches of the East and West coast.

It is full of facts and figures from our Convention and Visitors Bureau as well as saying some very nice things about our area.

Tanker plant should help our area!

The Northrop Grumman tanker contract will bring many jobs and many new people to our Gulf Coast area.  Mobile will see a lot of these buyers but Baldwin County will certainly get their share as well.

Our expectations are that once they see our beaches they will want to have a little piece of it for their very own.  Many of the executives may not stay in our area but might want a place that their family can enjoy when they have to be in our area on business.

2004 was our last recore-breaking year for rentals and 2007 has beat those numbers handily.  The summer season (June-August) was up 13.2% from 2004 and the spring season (March-May) was up a respectable 2.2%.

The special events our area hosts as well as the cooperative efforts of businesses of all types have all worked to help make this summer our best ever.

Insurance News- UPDATED March 07

Currently Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and several other coastal communities are discussing the possiblity of "captive" insurance for condo projects along our beaches.  This will allow the buildings to be rated individually with their insurance rates reflecting their ranking instead of being insured under the "blanket" type coverage offered now.  This is a form of "self insurance" previously not availabe in Alabama.

Please read this Mobile Press article for more details.

A Montgomery firm is working to open offices along the Alabama Gulf Coast to offer captive insurance.

Mobile gets HUGE contract to built refueling tankers for Air Force

Everyone is very excited about the announcement that Northrop Grumman will be building air refueling tankers in Mobile.  They were competing against Boeing in Seattle, WA for the contract.

"The deal includes 179 aircraft to be delivered by Northrop and its bidding partner, EADS North America, over the next 15 years. The team plans to assemble its tankers, which are based on a French-made Airbus jet, in a pair of new plants at Mobile's Brookley Field Industrial Complex, creating 1,500 jobs. "

Boeing has contested the awarding of the contract and has held hearings in Washington.  One of their issues is that they did not give the contract to an American company.  While Northrop Brumman is not based in the US, the people who will be actually building the refueling systems and modifying the airplanes ARE Americans, mostly Alabamians.
